Women's Tennis win Region 19 Title
Camden County College Women's Tennis team. Win's Region 19 title and a trip to Nationals!
Highlights of Region XIX Tournament:
1st Singles, Maddie Scambia, only gave up 1 game in the two day tournament. She is the new
1S region 19 champ, beating Hozza from Northampton (NH) 6-1, 6-0, last year's region 19
champ.
At 2nd singles, Bryn Kelleher came thru 2 decisive wins to become the 2S region 19 champ,
beating Brewer from NH in the finals 6-4, 6-0.
Our 3S player, Ana Ramos, who went undefeated at 5S last season, returned to play for the
second half of the regular season after having a concussion. Ramos made it through to the
finals, earning the team an important 2 points for winning her first round match. She lost to the
#1 seed from RCSJ in the finals.
4th singles, Maddie Piontkowski, had a very tough first round draw against a NH player who had
played the majority of her regular season matches at 2nd and 3rd singles. She fought hard,
split sets and lost in the third set. Maddie went on the win a crucial half point for the team in her
consolation match on day 1.
Our 5th singles player, Selena Guerrero, who doubled as a softball player for CCC this fall, also
had a tough 1st round draw against a NH player who played half of her regular season matches
at higher positions. Selena lost the first set in a tie break, was down 1-5 in the second set and
came back to win that set in a tie break. She went on to win her third set in a tie break as well!
Selena became the region 19 champ at 5S by winning yet another three set nail biter against
RCSJ in the finals!
6th singles, Tiara Clyde, who didn't own a tennis racquet before walking on the court this
season, was the number 1 seed, going undefeated the second half of the season. She
advanced to the finals via forfeit by RCSJ and lost a tough final match against NH.
Going into Day 2, CCC lead NH by only 1.5 points, advancing 8 out of 9 possible courts to the
finals (5 singles players and all 3 doubles teams). Going into the doubles matches, all against
NH, CCC was ahead of NH by 2.5 points. CCC had to win at least one of the doubles to win the
tournament.
1st doubles (Scambia/Kelleher) and 3rd doubles (Piontkowski/Clyde) very quickly found
themselves in a 0-3 hole, but both teams fought back and won their first sets.
2nd doubles (Ramos/Guerrero) were the first team off the court with a decisive win, thus
clinching the Region 19 title officially. !st and 3rd doubles went on the win their second sets
easily for a full doubles sweep against NH! All three doubles are the new region 19 champs!
The last time CCC won the Region 19 title was 2018. NH ended the 3 year winning streak in
2019 and went on to win again in 2021 (there was no tournament in 2020 due to COVID). This
CCC team has worked hard all season and brought the trophy back! The Cougars will move
onto the NJCAA National Championships in Peachtree City, GA 11/4-11/6! Go Cougars!
